Our Aim

"The mission of the American National School is to educate the whole child through a values-based curriculum conducted in a home-like environment combining academic excellence with individual character development"

Character Building

Character development at ANS is based on the cultivation of specific qualities that are Biblically and ecumenically based. Use of a common vocabulary of Character Building Qualities enables family members, in partnership with the school, to help each student to develop greater potential as a competent, effective, and valuable member of society. Character Building Reports for students are sent to parents periodically, and parents are encouraged to keep in close touch with teachers and, if appropriate, Houseparents in grades 1-8 in order to help their children effectively practice these qualities.

Character Building Qualities:

Good Judgment

"We think before we act."

Creativity

"We have our own ideas."

Gratitude

"We appreciate." "We are thankful."

Honesty

"We always tell the truth."

Self-control

"We do what is right." "We chose to behave."

Respect

"We are kind, considerate, and thoughtful to ourselves and others."

Courtesy

"We use good manners."

Cooperation

"We work together to support each other."

Resourcefulness

"We take only what we need." "We care for our natural world." "We solve problems."

Humility

"We are patient with ourselves and others." "We are gentle."

Reliability

"We are dependable." "We are punctual."

Charity

"We care." "We help others."

Counseling Center
Within the school, the guidance program is an equal partner with the instructional program. Each has the common goal of empowering students to function effectively in the society in which they will live.

At ANS, the guidance program is defined to include all of the efforts directed at helping students reach specific competencies or outcomes in the areas of:

1. Self-understanding and interpersonal relationships

2. Educational and occupational exploration

3. Career planning

The program is developmental by design, and includes activities organized and implemented by certified school counselors with the support of administrators, teachers, students, and parents. These activities are designed to meet identified needs and are provided through the four major components of the program which include:

1. Guidance curriculum

2. Responsive services

3. Individual planning

4. System support

The program is comprehensive, meaning it strives to meet the guidance needs of all students, the counseling needs of those who require special assistance, and the system support needs of the guidance program and the school.
